SIFTING THROUGH STORIES

Mixed-media animation requires quite a bit of source imagery. I found myself enjoying the hunt; finding many photos without a caption but clearly with a story.

I needed to focus my vision. I made a creative brief and a moodboard for myself. I was fortunate to make initial storyboards at Sarofsky Labs: Designing for Motion. It was in these stages that I really focused on dipping below the ocean’s surface to reveal even more interesting elements.

Below are boards that came straight from Sarofsky Labs. It was a great experience!

After I had those boards, I developed the look of key scenes and started some motion tests.
During this stage I scrapped the first board and split up the boards between the beginning and end.
There’s only so much time in an intro, and I chose between the strongest parts of my boards.
Unfortunately the the row boat didn’t make the cut!

After the overall arc was established, there was still a lot to do.
Final animation passes, editing with my reel, compositing, color, and SFX… it took a bit!
It was worth it; designs and frames from the final animation.
